The Superior boys hockey team fell 4-1 to St. Mary's Springs in the Division 2 Wisconsin state high school hockey tournament championship on Saturday.

This marked the Spartan's 38th overall trip to state and first since 2015 when they won the tournament.

"It's fun to be out there. [It's my] senior year, best hockey I've probably played in my entire life," said senior forward Drew Scharte.

"I love each and every one of my teammates. This group of guys is my favorite to play with so I'm going to remember them forever as my brothers," said senior forward Ethan Welch.

"A lot of the success [when] I look back on this season is that we got better every single game. We started late just like the Minnesota schools that are going right now. We struggled early but we got better and better. I would have loved to have seen us with a 24 [game] regular season schedule," said Superior head coach Jason Kalin.

Andrew Rude scored the sole goal for the Spartans to trail 3-1 in the third period.

Superior goaltender Jamin Durfee made 36 saves.

Brady Welsch scored two goals for St. Mary's Springs helping them claim back-to-back state titles.
