Derek Plante is rejoining Scott Sandelin's University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men's hockey staff as associate head coach from the departing Jason Herter.

"To watch the success they've had over the last five or six years has been just amazing. It's been kind of fun to really watch from afar because I knew a lot of the kids. I had helped recruit some of the kids, so it's been kind of fun on a personal level to watch those kids have great success," explained Plante. "It's very exciting to get the opportunity to come back with Coach Sandelin, work with Adam Krause, and the whole crew. They've got a good group of people that I've been involved with there before," he added.

Plante, first joined the coaching staff at his alma mater on June 9, 2010 and ten months later helped lead the Bulldogs to their first-ever NCAA national championship.

During his tenure at UMD, the Bulldogs qualified for three NCAA playoff berths.

"I am very excited to welcome back Derek to the Bulldog coaching staff," said UMD men's hockey head coach Scott Sandelin in a release. "Derek was an integral part of our first National Championship in 2011 and brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to our program." "He will step right in to continue the success we have had on and off the ice."

During Plante's hiatus from coaching the Bulldogs, he served as a Player Development Coach with the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL along with fellow Bulldog and current Assistant General Manager, Norm Maciver.

Plante is a member of the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame (Class of 2009). His senior season with the Bulldogs, he led the NCAA in points with 92. The Cloquet, Minn. product captained the Bulldogs to the 1992-93 WCHA regular season title and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. In the process, he was chosen as a Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist, a first team All-American, the USA Hockey Male Athlete of the Year, and the WCHA Player of the Year.
