Wisconsin and Michigan have both announced stay-at-home orders, but in a media briefing on Monday afternoon, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said he is not prepared to do so at this time, but that he "very soon could be."

Walz says right now, he doesn't believe a stay-at-home order is the best way to combat COVID-19.

"We will make the decision that's in the best health, and safety issue of Minnesotans, with the best chance to do what we're trying to do to. Keep people out of the hospital for the longest time possible, so that if you do need to go there, you get treatment," Walz told reporters on Monday.

Walz says if a stay-at-home order were to be implemented, it would likely last "multiple weeks to months", and include more businesses being closed. He says people would still be able to go to grocery stores, and be provided services they need.

Even without a stay-at-home order being issued, Walz says it is "probably inevitable" that the closures of businesses such as bars and restaurants that are already closed, will be further extended past March 27.

Walz adds that it has also been considered to cancel the remainder of the school year, but at this time he is not ready to do so.

These announcements came the same day that Walz announced he would self-quarantine after learning he had contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19.
