With the pandemic already overshadowing the winter ahead, the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department is preparing for more people to get outdoors.
Lincoln Park Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic starting Friday, Dec. 11.
"We are definitely seeing more people outside," Parks and Rec Manager Jessica Peterson said. "With fewer opportunities indoors and fewer opportunities altogether, one thing that has been available all the time has been our outdoor spaces."
Peterson said natural surface trails will remain open too. But closing roads allows people to meet up and space out.
Lincoln Park Drive will be closed from the bridge near Elephant Rock up to 10th St. The 6th St. entrance will be closed too.
And it means the road won't be plowed.
"Instead, what we're doing is implementing and piloting a new program called the Snowshoe Stompers Volunteer Program. And our snowshoe stompers are designated volunteers who can sign up to stomp a trail throughout the city," Peterson said.
If you don't have snowshoes, the city will lend you a pair along with trekking poles to use all season.
To sign up, visit the Duluth Parks and Recreation website.
