Just before sunrise Saturday morning, the first shots of the 2020 firearms deer season rang out across Wisconsin.

A few of them could be heard in Iron River. There, the Carlsons and their grandsons hit the woods taking their best shots at bagging a big buck.

"We're putting our time into spots that don't necessarily show us a lot of deer but will hopefully show us the right deer," said Todd Carlson. "So that's kind of how our morning went, not really active but when it is, it is."

Nine-year-old Cullen had a great start to the youth season. During that time he got his very first buck.

His thirteen-year-old brother Christian is working on tracking another buck and plans to head out again during the nine day season.

Their grandpa, Todd, said hunting is a fun way to spend time with family, but wants to remind other hunters to keep health and safety in mind during the pandemic.

"It's shaping up to look like it's going to be a good season for folks. Obviously everybody needs to be really careful [this year]," said Carlson. "Let's just be cautious and be considerate of everybody while we're out in the woods. Don't be tromping on other people. Be safe and have fun."
