Virginia City Hall to remain closed for at least a week

Updated: July 06, 2020 06:12 PM

Cleaning crews have already started working on the smoke damage inside Virginia City Hall. You may recall that two police squads caught fire on Friday, and that lead to significant smoke inside the rest of the building.

"It was fortunate no one got hurt. It was fortunate that it was contained to the garage. And it was fortunate that City Hall was closed that day," shared Mayor Larry Cuffe.

A strong fire door kept the blaze from getting into the police station and rest of the building. Still, smoke got innto the ventilation system, and has impacted all three floors. "The air quality is poor," Cuffe said.

For now, the police station and city council meetings will be staged out of the Miners Memorial Building for now.

Cuffe said this fire is an example of why they need a new public safety building, which they are seeking bonding money for. "That squad wouldn't have been parked at city hall," he said. The two squads that were destroyed were a 2016 model and a 2019 model, according to Cuffe.

City Hall staff are still available. Just call: 218-748-7500 and leave a message.
