Superior Blood Drive Competition with Police & Fire Departments

Updated: February 03, 2020 08:15 PM

A blood drive on Monday in Superior involved a friendly competition between two organizations that need blood donations the most.

At the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive, blood donors cast votes for either the Superior Police Department or Superior Fire Department for which organization is their favorite. The American Red Cross collected the donations and expressed why these groups rely on the blood so much.

"It's just a fun community recognition and to create an awareness because of the first responders," said Amy Kranig, Account Manager of the Red Cross. "They need to have blood for the situations that they're needing the blood for."

They say that they need blood donations of all types because of shortage during the winter season. It can be harder based on the weather for donors to come in and also because people can't donate if they are feeling ill. They say they only had a three day supply before they took more donations today. Each donation goes a long way for those who need and use it.

"One donation can help up to three people," said Darcy Johansen, collection speacialist of the Red Cross. "So that could potentially help up to close to 50 people just by the donations we get today."

The Red Cross will also be collecting blood donations tomorrow on UMD's campus. If you are interested in donating, they say that it is best to look online at the Red Cross' website for when they'll be in an area near you next.
