Around 100 delegates from northwestern Wisconsin hope to capture the attention of state lawmakers next week in Madison.

The group prepared Monday night to lobby for three main issues:

  • Medicaid
  • Better City Superior
  • Rural access to mental health services

Some of the priorities have been on the list before. But Douglas County Board Chair Mark Liebaert said they are important enough to return to.

"You have to go down there and face-to-face with those people so that you can convince them of your problems that are unique to northern Wisconsin," Liebaert said. "Without face-to-face, you aren't going to do that."

Among the 100 delegates are 20 students. Kal Kappes, a senior at Superior High School, said he wants to gauge his own interest in politics.

"I thought learning a little about the local government and the lobbying groups and how that all works seemed pretty cool to me," Kappes said.

Brennan Morrissey, another Superior senior, said he was there to learn.

"Totally blank slate, really looking to just get the experience and see how it goes," Morrissey said.

Kappes, Morrissey and Luke Persons all heard about the opportunity from a teacher and advisor.

"It really sounded like something I'd be interested in just to kind of get some insight into our local politics and see what we're really lobbying for," Persons said.

The 35th annual Superior Days are Feb. 11-12.
