DAKAR, Senegal (AP) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has raised Senegal's criminal code on homosexuality during his visit to the West African nation.

Senegalese President Macky Sall told journalists later, however, that “we're comfortable with our laws.”

The exchange highlighted the impasse the United States, Canada and other nations have had in trying to persuade Senegal and most African countries not to jail gays and lesbians.

Trudeau arrived Tuesday in the capital of Dakar and will leave Senegal on Thursday after meeting with university students and visiting an aid project. Canada did win Senegal's support for its effort to get a seat on the U.N. Security Council.
