Sen. Baldwin Supports Student Debt Relief Resolution

Created: February 16, 2020 10:39 PM

Secretary of Education Betsy Devos wants to eliminate $11 billion of debt relief for students, and Sen. Tammy Baldwin is working to reverse that decision.

Baldwin is supporting this resolution of disapproval with other senators against Devos which would overturn her changes with a majority vote in both houses of congress.

The Devos borrower defense rule makes it more difficult for borrowers who are defrauded by their school or harmed by school closures. Baldwin wants to support those in the country who are financially harmed in cases like these.

"There's slightly fewer than half a million students in the U.S. who have been defrauded or whose college went out of business," Sen. Tammy Baldwin said. "I think that we should step up to the Trump administration on this and fight for these students and these higher education institutions to be held accountable."

The Senate will consider the proposed Congressional Review Act resolution on the floor this week. The House also passed a companion resolution last month.
