Senator Baldwin Pushing for 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline

Updated: October 22, 2019 09:43 PM

We're used to three digit codes to get help, like 911, 211, or 411. And the ease of those numbers are behind the push to create one as a suicide hotline.

Right now, the national suicide hotline is a 1-800-273-8255. That's 10 numbers. The idea is to make it easier, with only three numbers, 988.

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin is joining Republican Senator Cory Gardner, from Colorado, to introduce the bipartisan National Suicide Hotline Designation Act.

She said, "Now is the time to have an easy number to remember, and an access point for people who are in crisis."

Baldwin mentioned the number of veteran suicides in Wisconsin, as well as the rise in suicides in farmers, as evidence to act now.
