On Sunday in Nashwauk, ten girls from Iron Range high schools were recognized for spreading kindness in the Kindness Campaign.

"This was really born at the height of online bullying and negativity, so I wanted to create an initiative that broke up the bullying," said boutique owner and creator Nina Pleshe, who is also the creator of the Kindness Campaign.

The girls were rewarded with a glam photo shoot from AppleTree Photography and makeover from Trendz Studio stylists in Hibbing. They were nominated by family members, teachers, or fellow students.

"I was like, 'what do you mean I'm going to get to do it? That's so awesome,' " said Aurora Watson, a Bigfork High School Senior, who was nominated for helping her brother who has autism.

"It was really just the little things that I do. It's not like anything crazy. I just try and say 'hi' to people, and smile at them, and I do this thing where I write little notes to people to brighten their day, or I send them a text message at random," said Cherry High School Junior Bailey Kowarsch.

That's why Bailey believes she was nominated, but she doesn't understand who nominated her as they wanted to remain anonymous.

"I don't do it to get an award or to be recognized, I do it because kindness is it's own reward in my mind," Bailey said.

Bailey and the other girls say the ultimate reward isn't what they receive, but instead what they are doing.

"I think it's not even really about winning. It's just to be included in something like this. There's so many girls that get to be included and that just shows that there are kind people out there," Aurora said.

"Hopefully others will see this, and see us maybe in our own schools, and be inspired by that to be kind to others as well," Bailey said.

The complete list of girls nominated is:

  • Sofie Anderson, Chisholm High School
  • Chloe Benson, Mesabi East High School
  • Carly George, Eveleth-Gilbert High School
  • Bailey Kowarsch, Cherry High School
  • Alayah Lane, Grand Rapids High School
  • Kayla Lavigne, Hibbing High School
  • Mariah Milton, Mountain Iron-Buhl High School
  • Hallie Shevich, Greenway High School
  • Johnnie Waldvogel, Nashwauk High School
  • Aurora Watson, Bigfork High School

The girls' stories of how they were nominated will be posted on the Nina Brooke Shop Facebook page ran by Nina Pleshe.

Nina will decide through seeing the amount of social interaction generated and the context of it which girl will receive a free prom dress.
