Deputies had been responding to an early afternoon report of an intruder at a residence in Backus in which a shot was fired.  They found a man with a firearm on a residential street.

Burch says the man approached deputies with a firearm and was then fatally shot by a deputy.  Another man was found deceased inside the residence.

Authorities say there is no threat to public safety at this time.  The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation as well as the Minnesota State Patrol and Pine River and Pequot Lakes police departments.

The officers involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice in such cases.
