DAMASCUS (AP) - Syrian media and activists say a Syrian was killed and another wounded in a rare clash between U.S. troops and government supporters in northeast Syria.

They say the group tried to block a U.S. convoy driving through a village in northeast Syria. Syrian state media says the locals pelted the convoy with stones and took down a U.S. flag from one vehicle when American troops fired live ammunition and smoke bombs.

The U.S.-led coalition said its patrol came under small arms fire from unknown individuals at the checkpoint and returned fire in self-defense.

Russian, Turkish and American forces have all been drawn into Syria's civil war.
