A Turkish news agency reported the helicopter's three crew members were killed. although opposition activists said only two were aboard. Activists said a later government airstrike on the provincial capital killed seven civilians.

The violence came as government forces came closer to capturing the last rebel-held part of a strategic highway linking southern and northern Syria.

The Syrian offensive has triggered a humanitarian crisis with about 700,000 people fleeing their homes.
