Minnesota mining leaders take home awards for education and outreach

Educational outreach is the main part of the mission of the northern Minnesota subsection of SME. And they have been honored for their work at educating people about mining, through two awards, the Minerals Education Coalition Leadership Award and the Organization Recognition Award.

Kurt Doran, a project manager at NTS, brought home the hardware from the national SME conference in Phoenix last month.

"These two awards go hand in hand. I think our organization over the years has developed an aptitude for this type of work, as well as a passion for it. We understand the need to educate the public on mining and the minerals in our daily lives," Doran told us.

The SME and others help organize things like the Iron Range STEM showcase. A new idea is to create mining-focused kits for teachers to use in schools.

Doran and others from SME are looking forward to the annual conference in Duluth, coming up at the DECC in April.
