Since 1995, Silver Creek Sled Dogs has had a team participate in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. this year, the kennel will have two with Ero and Colleen Wallin. This will mark Ero's first time running the marathon, but will mark Colleen's 16th.
Ero Wallin has grown up around mushing his entire life. When baseball season was cancelled last spring, the William Kelly high school senior turned his focus toward prepping his racing team for this winter. On Sunday, Wallin plans to take on the 300-mile, three day John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon for his very first time.
Reigning champion Blake Freking and 2019 runner up Jen Freking spoke with WDIO at the checkpoint in Two Harbors Sunday night. Both said they felt good going into the 2020 marathon. But both expect their teams to run slower in the warmer weather.
Martha Schouweiler is well known among the Beargrease community having won four consecutive Beargrease mid-distance races from 2015-2018. However this year, Otter Run Kennel will be represented by her daughter-in-law Erin Schouweiler.
The straw for dogs to rest on during the 2020 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has been stolen. The race said it is one of the most expensive parts of the race, and they estimate it will cost them about $2,000 to replace.
The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will be one of four races included in the inaugural year of a new Arctic World Series. The Beargrease will be the first race, followed by one in Norway, then Russia, then the Iditarod.

Since 2014 many Northlanders have rung in St. Patrick's Day by racing in the Saint Fennessy 4K. Last year however it became the first event canceled by the Grandma's Marathon organization due to the pandemic. This spring hundreds, including the daughter of Fennessy himself, were excited for it's return.
