The third phase of construction on Superior Street begins Monday. As a result, the intersection of Lake Avenue and Superior Street to Third Avenue West will be blocked off.

“Our goal is to work on the Lake Avenue and Superior Street intersection first so that traffic can go back over that Lake Avenue bridge” Kate Van Daele, Public Information Officer for the City of Duluth said. “MN-Dot will also start their part of working on that a few weeks after we start on Superior Street. This is all in an effort to help fix the bridge and make the connections on either side be a lot better than what they are right now.”

Detour signs will be put up to help drivers navigate and just like last year, fenced off sidewalks will be available for pedestrians.

“There will always be a way to get to Canal Park whether it’s from I-35's exits or from off of Fifth Street or Railroad Street, so there's lots of options to get to Park Point and go down and see the beach or go shopping down in Canal Park once those stores are opened, so lots of ways to get around,” Van Daele said.

Construction is anticipated to last to the end of October or early November depending on conditions.

“We're just asking that people pay attention to the detours that we put in place. We haven't really had an issue with that in the past, but again, just want to be sure that people pay attention. We certainly know that Superior Street is a busy street when it’s not being torn up so we’re excited to have this be our last phase and get things done quickly this year,” Van Daele said.
