The event hosted at the Holiday Inn and Suites in Downtown Duluth had judges and city leaders make the difficult decision of choosing one candidate as the winner of Youth of the Year after hearing from three inspiring candidates.

The lucky winner was Denfeld High School senior Makayla Pearson.

Pearson said she's been a part of the club for 11 years. At school, she is involved in a number of leadership roles, including executive board of the Key Club and Native Leadership Circle. She was also named the National Honors Society's Chair of Events.

"They taught me how to be a leader and my leadership roles in general based on where I've went to where I am now is so great. It just shows that change and that the impact at the boys and girls club is real and everything that they say is 100 true," said Pearson.

Pearson will compete with others in the state next month for a chance to compete at the national level.

The national Youth of the Year receives a $50,000 scholarship and serves as a national ambassador for the club.
