Two Duluth Republicans filed their paperwork on Wednesday to run for a senate and house seat in the Minnesota legislature.

Donna Bergstrom is running for the state Senate District 7 seat. Bergstrom is a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps, and previously ran for this senate seat in 2016. Her campaign tagline is "Diversity of Thought", and feels her background will help represent Duluth.

"I bring to them a diversity of thought with my background is broad and diverse," said Bergstrom. "I am confident that I can represent Duluth in St. Paul and put a limit on this government overreach and make sure that our citizen's taxes are well spent and that we have representation in St. Paul for all of us."

And Art Johnston is running for the state House Seat District 7B, which represents West Duluth. Johnston is a former Duluth School Board member. He says he will represent the people of Duluth rather than special interests.

"i think it's so important to have government that is transparent, so we know where our money is going," said Johnston. "They're always front and foremost, my constituents, and I will do everything that I can to represent them the best that I can."

Bergstrom and Johnston are endorsed by the Republican Party of Minnesota.

Both seats that Bergstrom and Johnston are running for are currently held by DFL incumbents Sen. Erik Simonson and Rep. Liz Olson. The primary election is on August 11th and other candidates have until June 2nd to file to run.
