The Michigan DNR has put out its annual call for artists in residence at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

The DNR says the Artist-in-Residence Program is open to artists, composers, and writers whose work can be influenced by the wilderness setting of park in Ontonagon and Gogebic counties.  They're accepting applications for 2020 spring, summer and fall and 2021 winter residencies lasting a minimum of two weeks.

Five artists from three states participated in the program in 2019, creating drawings, poetry, textiles, and oil and acrylic paintings.

The park has no shortage of resplendent landscapes from 25 miles of Lake Superior shoreline to waterfalls, wooded peaks of virgin forest, and 90 miles of rugged backcountry trails.  The 60,000-acre park has so many differing sights and activities that there was once an effort to turn it into a national park.

Artists will be asked to give talks or demonstrations during their residency and are required to contribute an art piece representative of their stay.  In exchange, artists will have use of a rustic cabin located on the Little Union River and, if requested, a three-night backcountry permit.

Applications are being accepted until Feb. 14.  More information is available at Porkies.org/Artist-in-Residence.
