Ring in the Japanese New Year on Monday

Ring in the Year of the Mouse with the Japanese New Year celebration in Superior.  It's called Shinnenkai and it's being put on by the Superior Sister City Commission.

This is the third year of the celebration and Kim Habig, a board member, said there will be traditional Japanese items there including, origami, treats, tea, kimonos, and more.  

"We'll have some information about our sister city relationship and how people can get involved," Habig said.  "Just some fun and games for everyone."

Pam Moore, another board member, said their goal is to promote cultural exchange and understanding of other cultures. 

They also hope to introduce people to other traditions and raise awareness about the sister city relationship.

Habig said some other things they do include exchanges and other outreach events. 

"Helping people understand a little bit more about a culture that's really quite different from ours," Moore said. 

The Japanese New Year celebration is on Monday, January 27 and it is free.  It's from 6 to 8 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Superior.
